On July 30, 2024, Nicholas Marcus Thompson led the Coalition Against Workplace Discrimination in publicly releasing an internal report exposing systemic racism and discrimination at the Privy Council Office (PCO). The report documented racial stereotyping, career barriers, and harmful workplace practices experienced by Black and racialized employees. Thompson called for accountability and structural reform, stating that discrimination at the center of government cannot be addressed through internal processes alone.
The PCO is the highest-level bureaucratic office in Canada, and is responsible for 137 government departments, representing about 270,000 federal public servants.
We are particularly concerned about the lack of accountability measures against leaders who were at the helm.
